According to legend, the story of Scrabble® began during America's Great Depression when an architect lost his job. Wanting to make use of his time, he decided to create a game as a source of income. Believing the ideal game should utilise both chance and skill, he developed a word game in which players drew nine letter tiles by performing a frequency analysis of letters from the pages of various newspapers. When the game failed to sell, he implemented a board with "premium" squares, added point values to each letter based on its frequency, and manufactured a few sets himself, but again, game companies were not interested until an enterprising businessman saw the potential of the word game and bought the manufacturing rights. And after making several significant adjustments the game continued to struggle until a department store executive fell in love with the game and placed a large order. Demand immediately skyrocketed and the rest is Scrabble® history!
